Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, fur was a staple of the trade industries between Europe and North America. In fact, the Canadian wilderness was exploited by many trappers who made a living off the land. Canada offered a nice variety of animal pelts that were highly sought after by many Europeans. Due to the high demand in furs, "fur-farming" became extremely popular. Farmers began breeding small fur-bearing animals such as, foxes. In Quebec, there were a number of successful fox farms.
